Rewards and gratitude

From Joe Polish in a podcast, where he quotes someone else:

Reward people when earned, monetarily if possible.

It is an idea of expressing gratitude. Tangibly. For your benefit, not the recipient’s. You get the benefit of making the payment—whether in money or some other way.

The quote is in the business context. But how far can it be extended into other contexts? And what about your interaction with self?

Gratitude is something you give, not something you get.
